It’s getting harder and harder to find affordable housing in the District of Columbia. Large commercial operators, like AirBnB and other online platforms, are making the affordable housing crisis worse by converting thousands of residential housing units into short-term tourist rental units and driving up DC rents 30 percent in the last few years, creating one of the worst housing shortages in the nation. The Sharebetter DC Coalition is circulating an online petition -- endorsed by the Metro Washington Council at Monday night’s meeting -- to send a message to the Mayor and D.C. City Council that “our access to affordable housing is not for sale. With affordable housing in DC at stake,” the Coalition says, “this is a fight we can’t afford to lose.” Check out this 30-second video for more details.
