DC LaborFest Today: "Sista in the Brotherhood," labor song vespers and Labor Night at DC United

The DC LaborFest rolls on this weekend with a free screening of the award-winning film "Sista in the Brotherhood" today, labor song vespers tonight and our third annual Labor Night at DC United tomorrow. Plus you can catch "Sista" director Dawn Jones Redstone and the Laborers' Patti Devlin on WPFW 89.3 FM this morning at 9a as LaborFest Director Chris Garlock hosts "Arise!" (catch it online too)

REMINDER: Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime chance to see writer/director/actor John Sayles and "Matewan" next Tuesday, May 16! The AFI has a gorgeous film print of this labor classic, celebrating its 30th anniversary, and Sayles will receive the LaborFest’s Labor Arts Award and will do a Q&A after the film. Click here to order your tickets.

Introduced by the Laborers’ Patti Edwards Devlin; Q&A after the film with local tradeswoman Gardenia “Dee” Walker
Explores race and gender in a male-dominated industry through the journey of a young black tradeswoman who faces discrimination on a new job site and must choose between making a stand or keeping her job. Winner of the Best Short Film and Best Oregon Short Film at the Portland International Film Festival.
Post-film discussion with local tradeswomen.

From Joe Hill to Pete Seeger to Billy Bragg, the songs of the labor movement have helped rally workers to the cause, inspired men and women to organize for justice, and articulated the aspirations of of tens of millions of workers around the world. Join Pete Rafle, Bob Carr and Bob Hatfield as we honor the music and poetry that has inspired the power of solidarity and the workers' struggle. All are welcome. Stay after the service for refreshments and conversation. *Vespers: A complimentary, casual (occasionally spiritual) gathering around themes of music & poetry, easing the transition from workweek to weekend. We are a thriving liberal spiritual community of some 1200 adults and children, a descendant of the historic All Souls Unitarian in DC, now in our 62nd year.
