![]() Nearly 20 family members of Gulchehra Hoja, a Washington-Baltimore News Guild member at Radio Free Asia, were jailed by Chinese police last month after she spoke to them by phone. Retaliation is commonplace for RFA workers, as they broadcast independent news to some Asian nations, including China, that limit press freedoms. “When we do our jobs, we are fearless, but when we go home…we do have fear,” said one RFA worker in the Mandarin Service. Hoja was able to speak with her parents last weekend, but much of her family remains locked up.
