Despite "a rip-roaring year, both journalistically and financially," Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos is offering workers there the equivalent of a cup of coffee per day in raises. And that's only "if you go to that Starbucks on 14th Street that offers the discount!" says News Guild Local 32035, which is negotiating a new contract for some 900 Post employees. "A cup of discount coffee isn’t going to get us to a signed contract," adds the Guild, which is planning a picket in front of the Post today at 12:30p (see Calendar). The union says the pay issue "goes beyond The Post, and speaks to the future of the American economy," arguing that "workers have somehow become the forgotten element of economic prosperity" and urging the Post's billionaire owner to "Invest in people."
