This year Juneteenth coincides with an important date for the Compass cafeteria workers at the World Bank Group buildings in Washington, DC. These workers have fought for a union for months and will vote June 20. UNITE HERE Local 23 is urging supporters to join the workers today at 2p (see Calendar) for a “Juneteenth Independence Day standout to show these workers that they are not fighting alone and to encourage them to exercise their right to vote.” Juneteenth commemorates the June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery in Galveston, Texas, the last of the states of the former Confederacy to accept the Emancipation Proclamation.
