At the urging of Washington Teachers Union Local 6, the Metropolitan Washington Council on October 20 voted to endorse Lillian Perdomo (Ward 1) and Ruth Wattenberg (Ward 3) for the DC Board of Education. "We join WTU Local 6 in urging DC voter support for Lillian Perdomo and Ruth Wattenberg, who will be strong advocates on behalf of D.C. public schools and our children," said Metro Washington Council President Jos Williams.
"Lillian Perdomo is a longtime D.C. Public Schools parent with vast experience working in our schools, while one of her opponents, Laura Whelan Phelan, is being financially backed by a group of outsiders who seek to strip teachers of some of their most basic rights as educators and workers," Williams said. "Ruth Wattenberg has a real understanding of the policies needed to drive the improvement of our public schools. A former staffer at the American Federation of Teachers, Wattenberg knows how important it is to engage all the stakeholders--parents, teachers, administrators and the community--in that process."
