To commemorate Martin Luther King Day, Plymouth United Congregational Church Pastor, Rev. Graylan Hagler and low-wage DCA service workers will block traffic near the MLK Memorial at noon on Monday to risk arrest as part of a large-scale national civil disobedience action in 10 major cities— including Boston, Chicago, New York City, Newark, Philadelphia, Miami, Washington, D.C., Seattle, and Portland. The workers are protesting "the gross injustices and inequality that persist at airports across the country, and are calling for change in the hopeful and visionary spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.," reports SEIU32BJ, which is coordinating the action.
DC Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton will speak in support of workers who are risking arrest as part of their commitment to do whatever it takes to win at least $15 and union rights for every airport worker. DCA baggage handlers, sky caps, wheelchair attendants, cabin cleaners, ramp workers, passenger assistance representatives, check-point screeners, fuelers, and security officers earn as little as $6.75-8/hr.
