Dozens of DC Nurses Association nurses from United Medical Center joined SEIU 1199, DC Jobs With Justice and labor and community allies to fight for UMC yesterday. The DC Council’s proposed budget would slash $25 million in funding for UMC, the only hospital outside of Northwest DC; this led to hospital management announcing on Monday that over 60 jobs will be cut at UMC between now and July 31. Councilmembers were moved by the nurses’ stories, and Elissa Silverman and Trayon White championed restoration of full funding for the hospital, joined by Brianne Nadeau, Brandon Todd and Robert White, who all pledged to work to restore funding before the final Council vote later this month.
