Building Futures summer class students who thought that a plot is a series of events that form the story in a novel or movie learned this week that it's also an area of land that has been measured and represents a unit. “Today, students learned concepts like plot, elevation, section, and detail” reported blueprint reading instructor Paul Ferenc, Apprenticeship & Training Coordinator from the International Masonry Institute/BAC Local 1 MD, VA, & DC. “It is critical they understand the importance of drawings in construction from the start,” said Ferenc. The latest Building Futures cohort of 21 students preparing for a career with the trades received materials and a measuring tape so that they can learn how to read and record measurements accurately, "always a crucial skill for a tradesperson,” said Building Futures Program Coordinator Sylvia Casaro-Dietert. Building Futures is a pre-apprenticeship program for low-income DC residents operated by the Community Services Agency, MWC, AFL-CIO.
