Metro Washington Council, AFL-CIO's Evening with Labor is our annual celebration of the powerful labor movement in DC and Maryland and all the victories, teamwork, and outstanding leaders of the past year. Save the date! The 2024 Evening With Labor will take place on Friday, April 12, 2024 from 6:00-10:00 PM at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, MD. The centerpiece of this event are our annual awards honoring the union locals, organizations, and individuals who have gone above and beyond in the past year. Nominations are now open for the 2024 awards! If you know an outstanding labor leader or organization, nominate them for one of this year's awards: Ticket sales and sponsorships for this year's event will open in February. We expect to have some exciting new choices for sponsorships this year, and look forward to featuring your organization as part of the celebration. Shortly after midnight on Tuesday the POLITICO and E&E News (PEN) Guild reached a tentative agreement for its first-ever collective bargaining agreement after 20 months of negotiations. Covering three years, the tentative contract includes improvements including higher pay that helps close inequities in the newsroom, stronger benefits and layoff protections, and some of the industry’s first contract language regarding the use of artificial intelligence. Workers at local community health clinic Mary's Center are taking steps to organize with 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East, citing unsustainable workloads and demands they say are hindering patient care. It’s the latest unionization effort at a local health system, including at George Washington University Hospital, Kaiser Permanente, and Unity Health Care. The union would represent about 110 employees, including psychiatrists, mental health therapists, pediatricians, family medicine physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and midwives.
