After winning the “Golden Picket” award at this year’s Evening with Labor for their creative mobilization of state workers, AFSCME Maryland hasn’t missed a beat. The union trained a new class of shop stewards in Cumberland last month, and has since graduated dozens of union members through one-day activist and steward trainings to “step up” and “organize to solve workplace issues.” Workers from state universities, transportation and corrections departments, and hospitals gathered to learn about enforcing the state workers’ contract ratified in February, and to handle grievances and appeals for their members. AFSCME MD will continue to host trainings throughout the state; email [email protected] for more information.
