Steamfitters 602 Open House inspires students

Students in the Community Services Agency's Building Futures program got an up-close-and-personal look at the building trades last Saturday at the Steamfitters Local 602 JATC Open House. “After the Orientation and math review, we stopped by the pipefitting practice class and talked to a couple of instructors who clearly explained what the class was about and answered all of our questions knowledgeably,” reports Client Services Coordinator Sylvia Casaro Dietert. One of those instructors was Oscar Hernandez, who graduated from Local 602’s apprenticeship program in 2013. “Our students related to him very easily because of his similar life experience,” says Casaro Dietert. “They could see themselves following his career path.” The students also visited with Tom Cornish, a 46-year veteran with Local 602. “It was really eye-opening – and inspiring – to hear Tom talk about Local 602 from a life-long career perspective where state-of-the-art training and the brotherhood bond has made all the difference.” photo by Sylvia Casaro Dietert
