An online petition, calling on DC Mayor Bowser to protect workers’ rights at the DC Streetcar has already drawn the support of hundreds of area residents. After DC Streetcar workers were fired for organizing a union, ATU launched the petition (ATU 689 Calls For Focus On Fixing Dc Streetcar, Not Fighting Workers 5/19 UC) last month calling on the mayor to protect workers’ rights and rehire those who were terminated and that the city take responsibility for fixing the streetcar and making it safer and more convenient. The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has outsourced responsibility for overseeing the project to RDMT/McDonald Transit, a French-owned company. Since taking over, “They’ve missed every deadline and instead have hurt businesses and residents in the community,” said Local 689.
