Graduate employees of the University of Maryland College Park are battling to win a union, not just for themselves, but for all Maryland GAs. Organized as Fearless Student Employees (FSE), they have introduced a bill, HB 199, that would end the statewide prohibition of collective bargaining for graduate employees. “For decades, this predominantly Democratic legislature has denied Graduate Assistants the right to negotiate over our working conditions,” said FSE President Yvonne Slosarksi. “We want the state to recognize us as who we are: employees who deserve collective bargaining rights and employment protections.” The Maryland House Appropriations Committee is holding a hearing on the bill tomorrow, when FSE is planning to present written and in-person testimony.
