Supporters of the Robin Hood Tax held a vigil outside Rep. Chris Van Hollen's (D, MD) office on Wednesday, April 7. Representatives of National Nurses United, the Amalgamated Transit Union, Friends of the Earth, Progressive Democrats of America, Food and Water Watch, and Maryland NOW then met with Van Hollen’s district director, Joan Kleinman, to advocate for the tax. Formally known as the Inclusive Prosperity Act, the bill sponsored by Rep. Keith Ellison (D., MN) includes a small tax on Wall Street speculative trades that would raise up to $300 billion per year. “It would take a big bite out of inequality while dampening the speculative frenzies that have destroyed the lives of millions of Americans,” say supporters, who commemorated Dr. Martin Luther King’s commitment to economic equality by holding vigils at congressional offices across the country.
