State Fed Rally to Honor MLK

(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)On Monday, in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.
Day, the 300,000-member Maryland State and
District of Columbia AFL-CIO will join faith
and civil rights leaders for an MLK Day Rally
for Jobs, Justice and Equality at 6p in
Annapolis. The rally will honor Dr. King’s
legacy, which has inspired an ambitious agenda
in Maryland – from the creation and
preservation of good jobs to investing in a
shared future and defending voting rights –
put forward for the coming year by labor and
progressive groups. “We are committed to
advancing the work that Dr. King and other
civil rights leaders began so many decades
ago,” says Fred Mason, president of the MD/DC
AFL-CIO. “We can think of no better way to
honor this great man and all of the men and
women in our nation’s history who fought for
working families, and to realize good jobs,
justice and equality for all.” The rally
features a host of civil rights, faith, labor,
and elected leaders, including Mason,
Congresswoman Donna Edwards, MD Lieutenant
Governor Anthony Brown,George Gresham (SEIU
1199), Roger Lash (IBEW 24), Reverend C. D.
Witherspoon (Southern Christian Leadership
Conference), MD Delegate Heather Mizeur, and
Sue Esty (AFSCME Maryland).
