In Memoriam: Newspaper Guild's Darlene Meyer Passes
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)In what was described by her colleagues as “a
deep and tragic loss,” longtime Newspaper
Guild Local 32035 activist Darlene Meyer
(center, in the dark blouse) has died at age
64. Meyer “was a tough and tireless advocate
for all Post
workers, particularly those in
commercial departments who might lack the
status and stature of more prominent newsroom
employees,” said Bruce Nelson, TNG-CWA
Representative. “Believe me, they were never
without a voice when Darlene was around!”
Nelson added. “She could silence a room with
her indignation over managerial
mistreatment.” An account executive for the
Washington
Post Advertising Department, Meyer had
served as WBNG's vice president since 2003 and
had been a Guild activist since joining the
Post
in 1998. Shocked and saddened delegates
bowed their heads in a moment of silence at
last night's Council meeting in Meyer’s
memory. Click
