Building the Next Generation of UFCW 400 Leadership
Monday, August 13, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)“While most young adults soaked up the summer
sun, two Local 400 members — Brittany Metts

attending the 37th United Association for Labor
Education (UALE) Northeast Summer School for
Union Women” reports UFCW Local 400. The
summer school, aimed at training and motivating
young union women to take on leadership in the
labor movement, seems to have had the desired
effect on Pryor and Metts, who came back
excited to apply what they had learned. “We
want to engage the young members and grow the
network so they can be the voice of young
workers at rallies, events and most importantly
inside their facilities,” said Metts. With an
average member age of 24, “engaging the young
membership has always been key” says Local
400 President Tom McNutt. “It’s terrific
that our union sisters Brittany and Stephanie
are taking the initiative and reaching out to
the younger membership. After all, they are the
future of the labor movement, they are the
future of Local 400.” Click
