32BJ SEIU Launches Online Petition Supporting Displaced Worker Protection Act
Thursday, September 13, 2012
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With a vote on the Displaced Worker Protection
Act expected at the Montgomery County Council
next week, 32BJ SEIU is urging supporters to
sign an online
petition to urge council members to pass
the bill. “Cleaning workers and other
property service workers in Montgomery County
are now subject to a revolving door of
employers, who are free to lay them off with no
notice,” notes 32BJ Capital Area District
Chair Jaime Contreras. “Workers are sometimes
fired within hours after a new contractor comes
in, creating instability and hardship for their
children and families. That's why we need the
Displaced Worker Protection Act to establish a
90-day transition period during which workers
would be allowed to keep their jobs.” -
