Prince George's County Council Supports Smithfield Workers
Monday, December 3, 2007
The Prince George's County
Council passed a resolution on November 20
supporting workers at Smithfield Foods, reports
UFCW Local 400’s Tony Perez. Introduced by
Council Members Exum, Dean, Harrington, Bland,
Olson, Campos, Knotts, Turner and Dernoga, the
resolution notes that “the evidence suggests
that Smithfield…continues to create an unsafe
working environment and engage in practices of
intimidation, threats unlawful discharge, and
harassment,” and reiterates the County
Council’s commitment “to sustaining the
rights of all workers, and supports their right
to engage in their vocation free from
interference, violence, threats or
intimidation.” The Council sent the
resolution to the NLRB and Smithfield.
