Four Chances to Support Hunger Strikers This Week
Monday, May 19, 2008
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Indian workers – who launched a hunger
strike in DC last Wednesday (Indian
Workers Start ‘Hunger Strike for
Justice’ 5/14/08 UC) – will ramp up
their campaign against guestworker exploitation
and human trafficking with multiple events
across DC this week. A briefing with
hunger strikers and other workers involved in
the campaign kicks off the week of action on
Tuesday at 3P. On Wednesday, a second wave of
workers will join the hunger strike during a
rally at 12P near the Capitol reflecting pool.
Community activists will also launch a
solidarity fast at the rally. Workers will
share their stories and discuss their campaign
and demands – which include Congressional
hearings into abuses of Gulf Coast workers
under the guest worker program; allowing the
workers to stay in the US and participate in a
Department of Justice investigation of Signal;
and Indian government action to protect future
Indian workers – at a community forum on
Thursday at 7P. And Friday at noon, Metro DC
area faith leaders will conduct a prayer circle
with hunger strikers. To take action and find
