(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
Nearly 6,000 area union members were on hand for Friday night’s 2nd annual Labor Nights at the Nats, as the Nationals thrashed the Houston Astros 10-0. Metro Washington Council President Jos Williams, Community Services Agency Executive Director Kathleen McKirchy, Northern Virginia CLC President Dan Duncan and AFL-CIO Executive Vice President Arlene Holt Baker joined the Nats mascot in welcoming the crowd to Friday night's game. The all-union Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics Association Honor Guard presented the colors, followed by a stirring rendition of the national anthem by Renee Barnes (below), an OPEIU Local 2 member who works in AFSCME’s Education Department. Ron Borza, 27-year-member of Iron Workers Local 5 – which brought the most union members that night -- was presented with a signed bat and ball by the Nationals, which he shared with his 4-year-old daughter Ashley and wife Karen.
