AFSCME Council 26
Executive Director Carl Goldman (r) has
been so busy organizing new members and serving
existing locals that his 20th anniversary at
Council 26 slipped by last year without notice.
The DC native has been involved in the local
labor movement for more than three decades,
working for a variety of different unions
including the American Federation of Government
Employees, the National Treasury Employees
Union and the Washington-Baltimore Newspaper
Guild, before landing at AFSCME Council 26 in
1989. In addition to serving the 17 locals of
AFSCME Council 26, as Executive Director
Goldman has overseen – and often personally
led – efforts to successfully organize units
in the Department of Justice, Department of
Agriculture, Federal Aviation Administration
headquarters, the Architect of the Capitol and
the Voice of America. Early in his labor career
he was a DC-area cab driver and was involved in
two separate campaigns to organize the taxi
companies where he worked. Goldman, who lives
in Silver Spring, also serves on the Executive
Board of the Metro Washington Labor Council,
AFL-CIO, and is a Vice-President of the
Maryland State and DC AFL-CIO. – photo: Goldman (right) is seen with
