Statehood For DC "Teach In" Thursday
Wednesday, June 8, 2011(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)
The American Civil
Liberties Union of the Nation’s Capital will
host a “Teach In” on the west lawn at the
US Capitol this Thursday
between 12P and 9P to fight for DC’s
statehood. “Since 1801, Congress has denied
the people of Washington DC representation in
the House of Representatives and the Senate,”
say event organizers. “All other Americans
vote to elect members of Congress – DC
residents are forbidden to do so. This means
Washingtonians have no say in creating the
policies that govern the United States- no say
on health care, no say on national security,
and no say on the economy. The people of
Washington want the same rights as all other
American citizens: equal representation in
Congress and local self-government.” The
event – which will feature live musical
presentations, informational tables,
testimonials and a candlelight vigil – is
free and open to the public.
