Walmart Ruling Sparks Demo at Supreme Court Tuesday
Tuesday, June 21, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The
Supreme Court will be the focus of a rally Tuesday morning at 11a
in the wake of Monday's Walmart
ruling. “The highest court in our
nation has turned its back on workers facing
widespread injustices,” said UFCW Local 400
President Tom McNutt. In a closely-divided 5-4
ruling, the Court ruled that Wal-Mart women --
led by lead plaintiff Betty Dukes, above --
could not band together as a single class to
challenge the discrimination they described in
receiving lower pay and fewer promotions.
“The fight for fair pay is far from over,”
promised Fatima Goss Graves at the National
Women's Law Center. “No corporation should be
above the law and no corporation should be too
big for justice,” added McNutt. The ruling
makes it harder for women employees who have
been denied promotions or paid less than their
male colleagues to seek justice and hold the
corporate retailer accountable for its alleged
actions. Rallies are also being
held this morning in Boston, New York City,
Philadelphia and San Francisco.
