LABOR ON THE MOVE: DC Jobs With Justice Summer Intern Tony Nguyen
Friday, July 1, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Sixteen-year-old
Tony Nguyen (r) is DC Jobs with
Justice’s 2011 Summer Benjamin Banneker
Fellow. A Vietnamese American
from the District, Nguyen starts his senior
year at Woodrow Wilson High
School this year. In his work with DC JWJ
so far, he’s been involved
with Labor in the Pulpits, the Respect DC
Campaign and the Caring Across
Generations Campaign. In his free time
Nguyen volunteers at the
Vietnamese American Community Service Center
and Chinatown Community
Cultural Center teaching hip hop dance,
and helping elderly Chinese
citizens learn English and computer
skills. Nguyen says that the
Benjamin Banneker Fellowship gives him a
valuable “opportunity to give
back to my culture’s community.”
After graduating from high school next
year he would like to go to college to study
topics relevant to his
community activism, though he also really likes
to play football, and
might become a dentist one day.
