Labor Delivers Big Win in Prince George's Special Election
Wednesday, September 21, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Labor-endorsed candidate Derrick Leon
Davis won big in Tuesday’s Special Election
to fill the District 6 seat vacated by Leslie
Johnson, wife of former County Executive Jack
Johnson. Davis, a member of ASASP, the school
administrators union led by Metro Council
Executive Board member Doris Reed, topped a
crowded field of 15, assuring his victory with
a "labor to labor" campaign combining targeted
phone calling and door-to-door canvassing to
union voters in District 6. “Knowing that
turnout would be low, we identified over 2,000
union votes for Derrick and focused on getting
them to the polls Tuesday,” said Metro
Council COPE Coordinator Rick Powell. “Our
efforts paid off thanks to the dedicated
Council affiliates who stepped up to
financially support the professional banking
campaign as well as providing union volunteers
to door-knock union households,” added
Council President Jos Williams. “That's the
kind of solidarity that makes our Council –
and our local labor movement – so
strong.”
