Daycon Loses Another Round, Owes Workers Over $1 Million
Friday, September 30, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)Daycon now owes its workers over a million
dollars. Workers at the Upper Marlboro,
MD-based janitorial and maintenance supply
company – represented by Teamsters Local 639
– struck last year and subsequently offered
to return to work. The National Labor Relations
Board (NLRB) has told Daycon make the striking
workers whole for any loss of earnings and
other benefits suffered as a result of the
company’s refusal to reinstate them, in
defiance of the NLRB’s orders to do so. The
NLRB on September 21 adopted an Administrative
Law Judge’s ruling that Daycon has engaged in
various unfair labor practices, the latest in a
string of wins for the union. “This is a
major victory,” said Teamster Local 639
President Thomas Ratliff, “Our members have
held strong for over 17 months and the
government has ruled on more than one occasion
that Daycon violated the law.” According to
Ratliff, the monetary damages owed by Daycon
now top $1 million and are growing quickly
because the NLRB ordered that interest on the
losses be compounded daily. - photo by Chris
