Hip-Hop Video Raps Walmart's DC Plans
Tuesday, November 22, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)With
Walmart’s announcement last week that it
plans to open two more stores in the District
– bringing the
total to six –
Head-Roc’s
"Keep DC Walmart Free!"
video is a timely reminder of the giant
retailer’s pattern of low wages
and firing employees who show an interest in
unionization, and the 1.6
million women around the world who have charged
gender discrimination in
pending lawsuits. Produced by DJ Munch and
featuring noted scholar Dr. Jared Ball,
“Keep DC Walmart Free" highlights the
classic arguments many towns across America
have used in their refusal to allow the
superstore retail chain into
their
economic
communities. "As a native Washingtonian, I am
appalled that the Mayor and City Council
are even
considering incorporating a known
economic/labor
predator
like Walmart as part of the solution to our
city’s economic woes," says
Head-Roc. "Now, this is what 21st century
labor culture is all about!"
