DC Labor Chorus Sings "Favorite and Sacred Songs" Saturday
Friday, December 2, 2011
(Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO)The DC Labor Chorus’ annual Concert of
Favorite and Sacred Songs -- set for this
Saturday at 7:30p -- “is not the usual solemn
holiday presentation of sacred songs,” says
Chorus Director Elise Bryant. “The songs have
been brought to the chorus by individual
members who find the songs personally
significant,” says Bryant. “As the chorus
is multicultural and multilingual, so are the
songs.” This year’s selections include a
parody of The Dreidel Song, which one member
brought back from the union actions in
Wisconsin, Harry Belafonte’s “Turn the
World Around,” “Tu Cantar” by Chilean
activist Eduardo Yanez, a militant Irish hymn,
the “Internationale” in Arabic, satirical
songs by resident parodist Will Rice, and a
medley of secular holiday tunes, for which
children in the audience are invited up to the
stage. “They are all delivered with the
spirit and verve typical of the DC Labor
Chorus,” Bryant promises. - photo of
