Workplace Issues and Collective Bargaining in the Classroom

HARD BARGAINING (5/3):
Coolidge Senior High School students learned
about unions and participated in a hands-on
simulation of a collective bargaining contract
negotiation at the first local Collective
Bargaining Institute for District of Columbia
secondary students. The Institute was held at
the University of the District of Columbia
(UDC) and was co-sponsored by the Washington
Teachers Union and the Community Services
Agency of the Metropolitan Washington Council,
AFL-CIO. COOLIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

Speakers' Bureau member Roger Newell
(International Brotherhood of Teamsters) makes
a presentation to Coolidge High School social
studies students about the benefits of union
membership and how union management contracts
are negotiated. The discussion with the
students was an orientation to prepare them for
a May 3rd Collective Bargaining Institute they
will take at the University of the District of
Columbia (UDC), that includes their
participation in mock contract bargaining.

County high school teachers role-playing a
union meeting during the Homestead Strike of
1892 during a Teacher Training Seminar
presented by the Community Services
Agency at the Montgomery County Education
Association in Rockville, Maryland.
