News: Tens of thousands of Americans protested at Walmart stores across the country on Black Friday; five actions were held in the metro Washington area, including at the H Street Walmart, where a group of workers held a sit-down strike on Wednesday... Today’s labor history: On this date in 2009, court documents filed in Boston say that Walmart has agreed to pay $40 million to nearly 90,000 Massachusetts employees who claimed the retailer denied them rest and meal breaks, manipulated time cards and refused to pay overtime. Today’s labor quote is by Walmart founder Sam Walton: “Share your profits with all your associates, and treat them as partners. In turn, they will treat you as a partner, and together you will all perform beyond your wildest expectations.” Sam Walton, who also said “There is only one boss. The customer. And he can fire everybody in the company from the chairman on down, simply by spending his money somewhere else.” |
