"Vindictive and childish."
That’s how AFSCME Maryland characterizes the Hogan Administration’s attempt to deny their members a cost of living wage increase that’s due this month. Instead of trying to punish AFSCME bargaining units, the union urged the Hogan Administration to spend more time “trying to figure out solutions to the staffing crisis, and how to continue to provide great services to Maryland residents." AFSCME Maryland is planning a rally on January 14. On today’s labor calendar, catch Bev Holton on tonight’s Labor Live@5 right here on WPFW. In today’s labor history, on this date in 2009, the presidents of 12 of the nation’s largest unions met and called for reuniting the American labor movement, which split into two factions in 2005 when seven unions left the AFL-CIO and formed a rival federation. The meeting followed signals from President-elect Barack Obama that he would prefer dealing with a united movement, rather than a fractured one that often had two competing voices. Unions from both sides of the split participated in the meeting, but the reunification effort failed. Today’s labor quote is by Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr., the American politician who served as the 38th vice president of the United States from 1965 to 1969. Hubert Humphrey, who said: “The history of the labor movements needs to be taught in every school in this land. America is a living testimonial to what free men and women, organized in free democratic trade unions can do to make a better life. … We ought to be proud of it!” Union City Radio is supported by our friends at Union Plus.
