“As workers’ interests continue to be distorted in immigration debates around the country, it is time to set the record straight,” says the AFL-CIO. The national labor federation is hosting “We All Do Better,” a conference on immigration policy and politics, next Monday, May 21. All are welcome, especially activists and advocates who work on immigration and labor issues. Go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar to RSVP.
On today’s labor calendar: grab your lunch and head over to Working Lunch: Short Films About Labor, from the DC LaborFest, a 1-hour program starting at noon at the AFL-CIO, when two local directors will share a pair of great short films. Complete details at dclabor.org, click on Calendar. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1912, in what may have been baseball’s first labor strike, the Detroit Tigers refused to play after team leader Ty Cobb was suspended. Cobb was reinstated and the Tigers went back to work after the team manager’s failed attempt to replace the players with a local college team: their pitcher gave up 24 runs. Today’s labor quote is by Big Bill Haywood, a founding member and leader of the Industrial Workers of the World, who died in exile in the Soviet Union on this date in 1928; Big Bill Haywood, who said: The mine owners "did not find the gold, they did not mine the gold, they did not mill the gold, but by some weird alchemy all the gold belonged to them!"
