In response to more than 140,000 comments received from the public and stakeholders, the National Park Service on Monday announced it was dropping its “pay to protest” proposal.
When the proposal was first made in August of 2018, local organizations involved in organizing protests – including unions – formed a coalition to oppose the Trump administration’s anti-protest proposals. “This is an extraordinary victory for the people of the United States,” said Mara Verheyden-Hilliard, an attorney with the Partnership for Civil Justice who headed up the effort. “And it says, without question, to this administration that the people of the U.S. will not be silent. They will not accept any effort to shut down their ability to speak out and to stand up for what they believe in.” On today’s labor calendar, striking Transdev bus drivers continue their picket line in Lorton, VA; and there are lots of labor walks in Virginia tomorrow; for details and the latest local labor calendar listings, go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1979, the UAW began what was to become a successful 172-day strike against International Harvester. The union turned back company demands for weakened work rules and mandatory overtime. Today’s labor quote is by American industrialist and philanthropist Peter Cooper, who said: “Every manufacturer ought to remember that his fortune was not achieved by himself alone, but by the cooperation of his workmen. He should acknowledge their rights to share the benefits of that which could not exist without their faithful performance of duty. Not until the capitalist is just enough to recognize this truth, can he ever join a group of workmen and feel himself among his friends.” You can support Union City Radio – and all the great programming here at WPFW – by making a generous contribution today; call 202-588-9739 or go to wpfwfm.org and Thank You!
