Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore is unionbusting. The National Labor Relations Board agrees with charges by National Nurses United that the hospital is illegally interfering in their workers’ efforts to organize. If Johns Hopkins officials refuse to agree to a settlement on the charges, the Board will issue a formal complaint against the hospital.
Five former employees at Briggs Chaney Wireless will receive thousands in back wages after DC’s Office of the Attorney General reached a settlement with the company. The former employees will receive a total of nearly $16,000 dollars in back wages and restitution and Briggs Chaney Wireless will also pay the District $5,000 to resolve wage theft claims. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1989, Carmen Fasanella retired after 68 years and 243 days of taxicab service in Princeton, New Jersey, earning himself a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. He started driving at age 17 and, reportedly, chauffeured Princeton Professor Albert Einstein around town. Today’s labor quote is by Gene Debs, the railroad union leader and socialist who on this date in 1920 received nearly a million votes for president while imprisoned for opposing World War I. Eugene Victor Debs, who said: “I can see the dawn of the better day for humanity. The people are awakening.
