There are lots of things Kalima Ramsey and her daughter could have been doing on a bright and sunny Saturday morning in late October. What they chose to do, along with the rest of the “Local 100 SMART Army,” was paint the fire lane curb at the Saint Ann’s Children & Family Center in Hyattsville, Maryland on October 21. SMART stands for Sheet Metal, Air, Rail and Transportation Workers. “When all was said and done, the curbs, which were pretty faded out, were bright yellow,” said Tom Killeen, Local 100’s Business Representative. “Just our way of showing union solidarity in the community,” said Killeen. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1921, striking milk drivers dumped thousands of gallons of milk on New York City streets and in 2009, some 5,000 Philadelphia-area public transit workers began what was to be a 6-day strike. Today’s labor quote is by Eugene V. Debs, born on November 5, 1855. Gene Debs, who said: “Privately owned industry and production for individual profit are no longer compatible with social progress and have ceased to work out to humane and civilized ends.”
