Congress voted on Saturday to raise the national minimum wage to $15 an hour, mandate equal pay for equal work and provide paid family leave for all working Americans. President Trump immediately signed all three bills into law. Trump also issued an Executive Order directing all federal employees to pay dues to the unions in their workplaces, tweeting that “the day of free riders is over.” And on Sunday the National Labor Relations Board issued a ruling requiring employers to recognize unions if a simple majority of their workers sign union cards. AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka hailed the actions as “a good start,” but said that there’s still more to do, including full employment and safer workplaces.
