Staff of The Real News Network and the Democratic Socialists of America have joined the Washington-Baltimore News Guild.
The Real News writers said that “Our goal is to bring the Real News’ vision into focus by joining a larger community of other media professionals dedicated to protecting independent media and empowering ourselves as workers.” Management at both The Real News Network and DSA voluntarily recognized the union. On today’s labor calendar, the Virginia AFL-CIO convention continues through tomorrow in Williamsburg. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1935, President Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act, providing, for the first time ever, guaranteed income for retirees and creating a system of unemployment benefits. And in 1980, members of the upstart Polish union Solidarity seized the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk. Sixteen days later the government officially recognized the union. Many consider the event the beginning of the end for the Iron Curtain. Today’s labor quote is by Lech Walesa, who said "He who puts out his hand to stop the wheel of history will have his fingers crushed." Walesa co-founded and headed Solidarity, the Soviet bloc's first independent trade union, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1983, and served as President of Poland from 1990 to 1995.
