The Maryland Center on Economic Policy last month voluntarily recognized a staff union represented by the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union. “We are immensely proud of the work we do as employees of MDCEP,” said workers involved in the organizing effort.
“By joining together in a labor union, we aim to foster an equitable workplace and a culture of cooperative problem-solving. When working people have a voice on the job, it helps us build an economy that works for everyone.” Center Executive Director Benjamin Orr said that “MDCEP’s leadership supports the right of our staff members to join a union, as we advocate for the rights of all Marylanders to organize in their workplaces.” In today’s labor history, on this date in 1948, the United Nations issued the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. WPFW is celebrating the 70th anniversary of this historic document in the history of human rights with special programming all day. Check out the complete schedule on our website at wpfwfm.org. As part of that programming, from 1 to 3 pm, Dr. Faye Williams and I will host "Workers Rights are Human Rights," focusing on articles 23-25 -- The right to work, the right to rest, and the right to an adequate standard of living – with a great line-up of guests. Today’s labor quote is by Cesar Chavez, who was jailed for 14 days on this date in 1970 for refusing to end the United Farm Workers' lettuce boycott. Cesar Chavez, who said: “The fight is never about grapes or lettuce. It is always about people.” Union City Radio is supported by Union Plus, which offers special rebates for union members shopping for a new car or truck this holiday season.
