Here’s today's labor history, On this date in 1894, representatives from the American Federation of Labor, the Knights of Labor, populists, railroad brotherhoods and other trade unions held a unity conference in St. Louis but failed to overcome their differences. Today’s labor quote is by John L. Lewis, who died on this date in 1969. A legendary figure, Lewis was president of the United Mine Workers for four decades, from 1920 to 1960 and a driving force behind the formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, or CIO. John L. Lewis, who said: "Populist movements themselves do not often achieve their own objectives. Their demands may be co-opted by the major parties, or they may be thoroughly rejected. But they do roil the waters. They signal that the prevailing political ideology is not working and the standard worldview is breaking down."
