As many as 14,000 AT&T workers may strike soon if they can’t reach agreement on new contracts. CWA’s Executive Board recently approved a strike by workers covered by AT&T’s Midwest and Legacy T contracts; The Executive Board’s decision came after AT&T Midwest and Legacy T workers voted on April 10 to authorize a strike, “as the company is stonewalling workers at the bargaining table over the need for good, family supporting jobs,” said CWA. The Executive Board’s decision gives CWA President Chris Shelton the go ahead to set a strike date if negotiators cannot reach an agreement. The AT&T Midwest contract covers workers in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin, while the Legacy T contract covers workers nationwide.

Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 2004, nearly 100,000 unionized SBC Communications workers began a four-day strike to protest the local phone giant’s latest contract offer. Today’s labor quote is by Michael Dukakis, Governor of Massachusetts, who in 1977, fifty years after the executions of two Italian anarchists – one a shoemaker, the other a fishmonger -- signed a proclamation declaring, “Any stigma and disgrace should be forever removed from the names of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti. We are not here to say whether these men are guilty or innocent. We are here to say that the high standards of justice, which we in Massachusetts take such pride in, failed Sacco and Vanzetti.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families.
