Election Day is tomorrow; who are the best candidates for working people in the DMV? The Metro Washington Council has screened candidates at every level and issued endorsements in most of the local races; you can find those on our website at dclabor.org, click on Political Action.
On today’s labor calendar, local labor activists continue to hit the doors and phones to turn out the union vote; for complete details on where you can get involved, go to dclabor.org and click on Calendar. In today’s labor history, on this date in 2007, some 12,000 television and movie writers began what was to become a three-month strike against producers over demands for an increase in pay for movies and television shows released on DVD and for a bigger share of the revenue from work delivered over the Internet. You can hear more about this strike in my interview with David Goodman, president of Writers Guild of America West, on the Labor History Today podcast, available on your favorite podcast platform. Today’s labor quote is by Eugene Victor Debs, the labor leader, socialist, three-time candidate for president and first president of the American Railway Union, born on this date in 1855. Gene Debs, who said; “Wherever capitalism appears, in pursuit of its mission of exploitation, there will Socialism, fertilized by misery, watered by tears, and vitalized by agitation be also found, unfurling its class-struggle banner and proclaiming its mission of emancipation.” Union City Radio is supported by Union Plus, where union members get special savings on auto insurance.
