The oldest union printing company in the DC area is going the way of the Linotype machine. McArdle Printing closed its doors at the end of September. “When the Bureau of National Affairs (which owned McArdle) was bought by Bloomberg they must have had a long term plan to get rid of the plant,” says Janice Bort at the printer's union.
Non-union Corporate Press is taking over some of McArdle’s assets and reports indicate workers are being forced to reapply for their own jobs, with pay and benefit cuts. "Some of these workers have 30 to 40 years with McArdle," says Bort. "It’s been a sad journey for them.” Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 2007, baristas in the Starbucks Workers Union won their grievances at an outlet in East Grand Rapids, Michigan after the National Labor Relations Board cited the company for labor law violations, including threats against union activists. Today’s labor quote is by Julian Bond, the social activist and civil rights leader who said: “Good things don’t come to those who wait. They come to those who agitate!” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which is committed to improving the quality of life for all working families; find out more at unionplus.org.
