After launching DDOTCanDoBetter.com last week to educate the riding public about safety and labor issues at the DC Circulator, ATU Local 1764 has also launched a new Twitter account -- @DDOTCanDoBetter-- a petition to DDOT for supporters to sign, and has released a powerful new video in collaboration with the Washington Interfaith Network.
The video explores the link between private companies exploiting skilled workers who used to earn a living wage as public employees who are now struggling to survive working for private for-profit contractors. With DDOT preparing to roll out its cherry blossom-themed bus, the union is urging activists to take to Twitter with the hashtags #blossumbus and #DDOTCanDoBetter to oppose privatization. We’ve got a link to the petition and video on our website at dclabor.org Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1917, the Supreme Court approved the 8-Hour Act under threat of a national railway strike. Today’s labor quote is by Ernest DeMaio, former President of the United Electrical Workers, who defined privatization as: “The practice of transferring government property, enterprises and services to private ownership. …Legalized looting of public assets. The spoils that go to the winners of elections. The final step in the rip-off of the public purse.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families. Check them out at unionplus.org!
