“Now Montgomery, next Annapolis” was the spontaneous chant that broke out at the press conference that followed the unanimous passage of the $15-dollar an hour minimum wage bill Tuesday by the Montgomery County Council. The Maryland Fight For $15 coalition praised the Council for passing a strong minimum wage bill. "The difference that $15 an hour will make for so many working families cannot be underestimated,” said Maria Naranjo, 32BJ SEIU District Director. “The Council," she added, "has set an example for the nation to follow by helping to improve life for men and women who are struggling to keep up with the high cost of living in Montgomery County.”
On today's labor calendar, DC Attorney General Karl Racine will be our guest on this week's edition of Your Rights At Work here on WPFW starting at 1pm; and for all the latest labor events, go to dclabor.org and click on calendar. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1935, eight unions affiliated with the American Federation of Labor created the Committee for Industrial Organization, to focus on organizing mass production industry workers. In 1938 the unions would formally break with the AFL and become the Congress of Industrial Organizations, which in 1955 returned and became the AFL-CIO. Today’s labor quote is by John L. Lewis, president of the United Mine Workers, and one of the founders of the CIO, who said: "Out of the agony and travail of economic America the Committee for Industrial Organization was born."
