Today is Equal Pay Day, which marks the day when women – a full three months later -- finally earn as much as men did in 2018. Women working full-time, year-round, still only earn 80 percent of what men make, and the number drops to 61 percent for African-American women and 53 percent for Latinas.
If you think that’s outrageous, so do the folks at WILL Empower -- Women Innovating Labor Leadership – and they’re hosting an Equal Pay Day (Un)Happy Hour tonight from 6 to 8pm at Pizzeria Paradiso on M St Northwest, where you can come network with others who are fighting for pay equity and worker justice. Complete details, as always, on our website at dclabor.org, click on Calendar. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1923, the Supreme Court declared unconstitutional a 1918 Washington, D.C., law establishing a minimum wage for women. Just for the record, you won’t be surprised to hear that all nine justices at the time were – you guessed it – men. Today’s labor quote is by actress Patricia Arquette, from her acceptance speech for the 2015 Best Supporting Actress Oscar. Patricia Arquette, who said: “To every woman who gave birth, to every taxpayer and citizen of this nation: We have fought for everybody else’s equal rights. … It’s our time to have wage equality once and for all and equal rights for women in the United States of America.” Union City Radio is supported by our friends at Union Plus.
