(audio) The first nationwide food drive was in 1993 which 11 million pounds was collected which back then was quite a bit. And in the last 26 years it just has increased and increased.”
That’s Christina Vela Davidson, Assistant to the President for Community Services at the National Association of Letter Carriers, on the latest “State of the Unions” podcast from the AFL-CIO. The 27th annual Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger® Food Drive is scheduled for Saturday, May 11. (audio) “In 2016 we had a record collection which was a little over 80 million pounds. But the good thing is in the last 15 years we have collected over 70 million pounds of food for the community...that is just...for a one-day food drive...literally from 7 to 5 that is excellent...that is outrageous...for all the volunteers and all the letter carriers that help make this...it’s so humbling and heartwarming.” We’ll have more on the annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive in the weeks ahead; you can hear more about it on the State of the Unions podcast. In today’s labor history, on this date in 1930, the IWW organized the 1,700 member crew of the Leviathan, then the world’s largest vessel. Today’s labor quote is by IWW organizer Henry McGuckin , who said: “By and large, we were decent men and women who fought the day-to-day battles, took the blows, and shed the blood that made today’s labor movement possible, a movement that could profit from a fresh infusion of Wobbly commitment to social justice. We made mistakes, but were destroyed as an organization only because we were too successful. We made our mark.” Union City Radio is supported by our friends at Union Plus.
