Here’s today's labor history:
On this date in 2003, the administration of George W. Bush declared that federal airport security screeners would not be allowed to unionize so as not to, quote unquote "complicate" the war on terrorism. The decision was challenged and eventually overturned after Bush left office.
Today’s labor quote is by H.L. Mitchell, President of the Southern Tenant Farmers' Union, which led a sit-down of 1,700 families on a Missouri highway on this date in 1939. H.L. Mitchell, who said:
“Nowhere in human history can one find that a nation, a race or a class of people have become free men and upstanding citizens without first having the benefit of self organization”
