CWA has launched a solidarity fund for Frontier Communications workers striking in Virginia and West Virginia. "The strike is not about money, it’s about job security,” CWA Local 2222 President Jeremy French tells Union City Radio. We've got a link to the fund on our website, dclabor.org
Over 800 local trade unionists and their allies turned out last Saturday night for the Metro Washington Council's 41st annual Evening with Labor. The evening celebrated solidarity and 2017’s award-winners, including SEIU 32BJ and UNITE HERE 23 for Organizing; AFSCME Maryland Council 3 won the Golden Picket award; CASA was the year's Outstanding Ally and OPEIU Local 2 was the Community Services award-winner. A special award went to Kathleen McKirchy, who's retiring after 35 years at the Council and the Community Services Agency. Here’s today's labor history: On this date in 1830, the term “rat,” referring to a worker who betrays fellow workers, first appeared in print in the New York Daily Sentinel. The newspaper was quoting a typesetter while reporting on replacement workers who had agreed to work for two-thirds of the going rate. Today’s labor quote is by Daniel DeLeon, the American socialist leader and writer, who said: “The capitalist class is interested in keeping the workingmen divided among themselves. Hence it foments race and religious animosities that come down from the past.” Union City Radio is supported by UnionPlus, which provides unique products and discounts for working families.
